About a year ago I made a blog page to make the chip wrapper purse. I've had such positive feedback from that page that I decided to make a sister page of how to make a pop tab purse.
I've posted the first pictures of my purse that I made from pop tabs. I will begin the step by step tutorial soon!!!!!

please post the tutorial...i have looked everywhere for a good tutorial. i have tried to make a purse, but the tabs are all out of line and not sure how to put them together. please help!!!!!

Hi, this is Jutta from Denmark calling. I just want to ask you, if pop tabs are the same as can tabs. I collected a lot of tabs from beer cans, because i saw a purse made of those, and would really like to make one, doing crochet is no problem for me. Really nice items you have made!!!

Yes can tabs are the same as pop tabs. Doesn't sound to nice to tell kids to make a purse out of beer tabs, lol. So.....I call them pop tabs but they are all the same....TABS.

I just love these purses, have collected tabs for months but it takes time when you don't really drink soda or beer.
In Denmark we have gold beer where the tabs er gold coloured, the christmas beer have blue tabs, some energydrinks have red tabs and Iv'e seen the tabs in green too.
Would be cool to make coloured patterns :D
All my friends collect tabs for me, so hopefulle I can make my purse soon.

Thank you so much for posting the directions--I am going to try using needle point thread to add many colors to the otherwise plain silver tabs. I am not too sure if it will hold tight enough but I will try. I do not like the texture of acrylic yarn.

I don't think I would want to use needlepoint thread as I am afraid it would not wear too well. It is not made to withstand the abrasion that I am sure a purse would be subjected to. There are some nylon threads on the market that I think would word better. There is one that is manufactured in Mexico that you can purchase online. I think the brand name is Omega

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I LOVE this post, it's great! This is JUST what I needed!! I'd like to offer a suggestion: the end of the tab you have pointed up is the end that is broken from the can. I'm guessing this is because you wanted to prevent the rough end from fraying your cording? Well, I have been working with pop tabs in other art forms for 3 years now, and I ALWAYS take a flat blunt surface like a butter knife and flatten that edge down, bend it down over itself. I LOVE your work, very neat! But my personal opinion is that it would look better to have the "smooth" end of the tabs outward and the rough edges inward, hidden under the other tabs. Thank you so much for your compliment about my blog and your suggestions. I think that which end of the tab that you have facing upwards is a personnel preference. As you can see the picture of my belt, I have the small ends up and those 2 purses on my blog page have the fat ends up. I've made purses both ways. The reason I sometimes put the fat end up is so the entire work has more silver showing and the tabs actually look like pop tabs that way. You can really tell they are pop tabs when you put the fat ends up which makes more of a conversation piece because everyone recognizes what the purse is made of.
I'm not really sure on what you are meaning when you bend the fat end of the tabs, down and over itself. I have taken needle nose pliers to take off the rough pieces or bend the metal back flat. Most of the time I can use the tabs just like they come off the can unless.....the person pulls them off and it leaves that little ring on. Them I have to bend those off.

I was just wondering how would you go about having the top open and close? Would I be better off making half of the body of the purse taller than the other so I could flop it over and then maybe put a button or tap on the flap and a loop on the body? Or should I try and sew in a zipper. thxs for you time and for posting this great tutorial for free!

Ahh, I see you have completed your tutorial! I had looked here when I was first trying to figure out how to make these, but found incomplete instructions. It seemed in reading that perhaps someone was stealing your photos and using them as if they were your own - you seemed pretty mad and justly so! Amazing what people will do! Anyway, your first posts did get me started and after a bit of trial and error on my part I have now made several successful bags.

I construct my bags beginning with the bottom and ending with the straps. The straps are just a continuation of the body of the bags. Nothing is added on afterward which makes it a one piece design (There is a beginning and an end of course). Just so you know I didn't steal your design. :)
Anyway, I'm glad to see that you've completed your tutorial and it's helping so many people.
I started crocheting the bottom of the bag and being just a basic crocheter, I lost count of the rows. Could someone please tell me how wide and long this bottom should be in inches. I would appreciate it. Thanks Glenna
I have another question, if someone know the answer, do the pop tabs need to be filed or prepared in some way so they are not sharp? I wonder if they are not, will they cut the yarn? Thanks again. Glenna
How much yarn does it take for the black purse? Thank you so much for posting this! A friend of mine wants one of these and I agreed to make it if I could figure out how to do it, your blog will make that possible!
Carmen, I don't know exactly how much yarn I used. If your using yarn it is so easy to tie on and keep going. If you use the nylon thread like I show in one of the pictures, I would suggest buying a whole spool of it and make your purse. It does not tie together very well. Good Luck, Mylinda
